CALZADA is a relatively common surname in the regions of Zamora, its origins date back to the Middle Ages, and it makes generic reference to a remote origin in one of the towns that bear this name: eg Calzada del Coto or de la Valdería in León, Calzada de Tera in Zamora or Calzada de Valdunciel in Salamanca, where the ancestors of the various family lines bearing the surname would come from. The spread of the surname "Calzada" from a specific place, in this list it could be San Cebrián de Castro or Pajares, but that undoubtedly came from another place, just as it came from another, but this time we will start from San Cebrián de Castro or as they called it "de Castrotorafe" in the 17th century. It is in this place in Zamora where Juan de Calzada died, married to Catalina González, I calculate that based on the indications made by an 80-year-old witness in the year 1587, the date on which a process of nobility presented by his grandson was seen Juan de Calzada García, nobleman who they say his grandfather won in the battle of Granada for the Catholic Monarchs, I calculate, I say, that his death would be around the year 1544, more or less. From that place we verify that this saga began to spread through the towns and places around it, such as Villarrín de Campos, Villafáfila, Corrales (del Vino), Manganeses de la Lampreana, Otero de Sariegos, Arquillinos, Tapioles (Villalpando), San Martín de Valderaduey, Vidayanes, Piedrahita, Pajares and others such as Fuentes de Ropel, Decenillas and others. Undoubtedly this spread is due to the different marriages, in which the intervention of the clerics of their parishes was very important, by arranging marriages in order to avoid inbreeding and clean up their ecclesiastical economies. The confection of this "saga" has been facilitated by the large number of files in the archives between "judicial" quotes and which in this case correspond to claims of nobility before the mayors of the sons of the Chancery of Valladolid. It is known that the solution to these claims and how to act were transmitted among the relatives, and if in one place an individual from this "saga" was registered in the lists of the pecheros, being new for having married a local, they did assert their privilege and if they have no settlement with the local council, sue. There were several incitements by the kings or administration, to reduce these privileges as much as possible, thus stimulating the collectors to select the exemptions, which motivated a new presentation of the documentation that gave rise to the privilege.
These proofs of nobility were trials before the Sala de Hijosdalgo of the Royal Chancery of Valladolid, to demonstrate their noble origins, generally when they changed neighborhoods, because the councils that welcomed them used to deny the nobility of the new neighbors, to not apply the tax exemption to which the hidalgos were entitled.
Undoubtedly beforehand, especially in times of war and repopulation, there was a logical advance from north to south of the surname "Calzada" together with others.
In Villafáfila it is a surname that has been documented since the 18th century, with FRANCISCO de CALZADA de COCA (Otero de Sariegos 11-23-1765-SS 1840 Villafáfila), married in Villafáfila in 1788 with: Mª Cruz Rodríguez Caballero (Villafáfila S. Pº 1769-SM 1816 Villafáfila), at first they settled in Villafáfila, proving their nobility through a lawsuit in 1789, and their first daughter was born there, later they lived for several years in Otero and definitively returned to Villafáfila in 1802, where they died.
