Location: Chapel of the Neighborhoods. It had its own altar in the church of San Martín, later joined to the central nave by a semicircular arch, the chapel of Ntro was built. P. Jesús Nazareno, Gothic, with a square floor plan, an apse facing east and a beautiful dome raised on pendentives, with ribs and rosettes. It was built with masonry stone. It had a Renaissance altarpiece with green and brown colors, formed by two double columns between which was a niche, which contained the titular image and above it a triangular tympanum. The main facade, facing north, was made of masonry stone in the part of the chapel of Jesús Nazareno.

It was the seat of the chaplaincy of the Barrios since the mid-16th century, when the chapel was founded by Don Pedro del Barrio [2] , "el Perulero" , an Indian emigrant who returned from America with great wealth (1539). death left a thousand ducats for its construction, with three chapels for his descendants [3] .

Popular Nickname: The Nazarene.

Processional image: In Holy Week, since the beginning of the 18th century, it parades in the procession on the morning of Good Friday, under the Brotherhood of Jesus or Dulce Nombre de Jesús, it left from the church of San Martín and where the brotherhood was located, along with with the crosses to ask for, María (formerly also called Soledad), from the 19th century since 1831 with Saint John, the Encounter would take place and would be called the Encounter procession,under his Brotherhood of Jesús Nazareno until its disappearance in the 1950s. XX, in the procession the trumpet is played, the church of San Martín disappears in 1953 it leaves from then until today from the church of Santa María del Moral, the meeting disappears around the decade of the 70s. XX for lack of preacher.

There is no reference to this image in the factory book, but there is reference to his brotherhood.

It is not an image of clothing, but of a complete bulk, even if it is worn. She wears a purple tunic, with gold trim, revealing only her head and hands. From her neck hangs a cord finished in golden tassels. On her head she wears a metallic crown of thorns, which forces her hair (real, not sculpted) to fall to her shoulders. Her face appears downcast, without encouragement, exudes sadness and resignation with a lost look. She has a sculpted beard, abundant and parted. It is an image made to reach the compassion of the believer and participate in the suffering, fully achieved by the sculptor. It represents Christ on the way to Calvary, with the cross on his back, tied with his hands, to each of the pieces of wood.

HISTORY

This brotherhood was based in the church of San Martín, and must have arisen at the beginning of the 18th century. Thus in 1714 in the factory book of the aforementioned parish an inventory of liturgical objects is made and they are mentioned:

“some walks in which Nª Srª comes out. … some walks in which Jesus Nazareno comes out” [4] ,

from which it can be deduced that even before that year the images of Jesus and Mary were taken out in procession. Already in 1704 altar of Nrª Señora de la Soledad, so possibly it would be the one that would come out in procession.

In order not to be mistaken, the Virgin is sometimes called by the name of Nrª. Mrs. María and other Soledad, it is the same image that accompanies Jesús Nazareno in procession, and that today we call her María.

In the pastoral visit of 1715 the Bishop of Astorga approved:

“the rules and constitutions of the brotherhood that has been established again in said church (S. Martín) of Jesús de Nazareno” ,

so it is to be assumed that the brotherhood would not have been active for a long time.

This rule has not been preserved.

Only men could belong to this brotherhood.

In 1750 the account book and rule of the Jesús Nazareno brotherhood are mentioned, and the litters of Nª Srª, Jesús and La Soledad.

1770 reference is made to the brotherhood of Jesus in the referral file of the Viscount of Valoria, mayor of Zamora, to the Count of Aranda of the state of the congregations, brotherhoods and brotherhoods that exist in the towns of his jurisdiction, Villafáfila (Zamora) ( sheet VIII and ss).

1779 one of the altars of San Martín had been placed under the invocation of the Nazarene.

In 1794 the brotherhood of Jesús Nazareno only had one book, in addition the image had two robes of Jesus, black velvet, with a gold stripe to go out in procession and with a black banner.

The first account book of this brotherhood that is currently preserved in the diocesan archive [5]   dates from 1819 and it contains a rule approved in 1832 and its reform in 1882.

The brothers were only men and their number amounted to 321 in the year 1822:

-104 of the parish of San Pedro.

-76 of the parish of San Salvador.

- 74 of the parish of Santa Maria.

- 66 of the parish of San Martín.

In the early 1800s, it was customary to gather on Palm Sunday in the church of San Martín to auction off, by auction, the money they gave for carrying the images of Jesus, Our Lady and the crosses to ask for.

1820 were paid by auction:

“Jesus paid 6 bushels of bread, due in August .

40 reais for taking Maria.

2 bushels for the crosses to ask for.

1821 were paid at auction:

120 reais for Jesus.

100 for Maria” [6] .

That year an inventory of the brotherhood is made and that is why we know that the board was made up of 2 mayordomos, 2 officers and 1 caller. The belongings were 20 candles, 24 black robes to wear in the Good Friday procession, 10 crosses for the government of the procession, 1 hood, a new banner or banner, and a new robe (shirt) of Jesus.

In addition to the black tunics, which in the following years amount to 35, four white discipline shirts are mentioned in 1824, so we know that some brothers used them in the procession to discipline themselves. The government crosses of the procession were made of iron and those of asking for alms were made of wood.

Some deceased took out tunics for their shroud and their heirs replaced them or paid for them.

1826 Joaquín Prieto agrees to pay the priest and the officers of the brotherhood 80 reais for carrying Soledad on Good Friday and other processions in which this image appears. Felipe Tejedor 120 reais for carrying Jesus. That year the black robes of the brotherhood were 34, and 4 white shirts to wear Nrª Señora.

1829 records of what was delivered from the outgoing butlers to the incoming ones:

“On the twenty-second day of November, together with the incoming and outgoing Mayordomos, they are the outgoing Matías Batos and Apolinar Zamorano, and the incoming Santiago B minor, and Santiago Salvador, they have been given the following garments:

The brothers who wanted to wear a tunic in the procession paid four fourths, and if they also wore a cross, six fourths.

Since 1831, in addition to those previously mentioned of Jesús Nazareno and María, the image of San Juan and the trumpet began to be auctioned that year, so it is to be assumed that since then the ceremony of the Encounter with its reverences, of This ceremony would take the name of the procession as we know today the Procession of the Encounter, and that year they are worth less:

This Saint John, who is the Baptist, comes from the church of Saint John, which was abolished as a parish in 1775 and was demolished before 1807. After its disappearance, the image was transferred to the church of Saint Martin.

Easter Trumpet

 

The "Ceremony of the Encounter" consists of the representation of the Encounter between the three images and bowing to each other, this act was carried out under the sermon of the Encounter given by a preacher (in the Plaza Mayor from a balcony that the house today belongs to Isabel Rodríguez Carnero) under his words the penitents were acting with his image, where Jesús Nazareno located on the corner of Plaza San Martin (Caja Rural), Maria in the Town Hall and San Juan (Calle Costanilla today is D. Daniel Fuertes) at the same time that the Sermon of the Encounter was given approached each other in the Plaza Mayor making the "Obeisances" between them, and that said ceremony has later given its name to the procession as we know it today.

In 1832 the brotherhoods met in the chapel of Carmen in the church of San Martín, and the parish priest, Don Bartolomé Alonso Estébanez, urged them to appoint a commission to draw up a rule for the brotherhood, since they did not have one (it would have been lost). the old one). The commission was made up of, in addition to the parish priest, Don José Orduña, Gabriel Costilla, Ambrosio Jiménez and Silvestre de León [8] .

Fourth  are designated for ordinary meetings the day of the feast of the owner of the Brotherhood and Palm Sunday at three in the afternoon, and extraordinary meetings will be held whenever the parish priest sees the need to deal with something that does not admit delay.

Fifth , in all meetings the parish priest will preside and every year after the day of the festival he will take accounts from the mayordomos and will manifest them in the First Meeting that he will do.

Sixth , the mayordomos with the agreement and consent of the parish priest will appoint successors and there will be no more than two, those who will be published on the day of the function at the time of the sermon and the two outgoing ones will be in charge of governing the processions of the brotherhood.

Siete , the function will be held as usual on the Tuesday after two Sundays of All Saints, with mass and sermon eve, which will be at the expense of the mayordomos and all the brothers are obliged to attend under the penalty of half a pound of wax except for the servants and day laborers who will pay only one real

Eight , for the best service of God, all the brothers are obliged to confess and take communion on Easter days from the Nativity of our Redeemer to the adoration of the Holy Kings, which they can do in any parish taking care of notify the priest of the brotherhood of this, although it is to be hoped that such a religious act will not be denied by any brother, nor will external penalties be necessary, as these are sometimes used so that men better fulfill their duties, we agree that for the first year that they do not confess or receive communion they pay a quarter of wax, the second half a pound and the third are excluded from the brotherhood without an ordinary meeting.

Nine , being a work of piety, attending the funeral of any Catholic is more recommended than that of the brother brother, therefore it is mandatory that 12 brothers appointed by the Board on the day of the function attend by themselves, and if they cannot, they do it for another that he also be a brother, and that this charge will last the whole year and those appointed who, by themselves or for another, do not attend will pay half a pound of wax.

Ten,  all the brothers, except for those in their sixties, will attend the procession of Jesus on Good Friday under the penalty of half a pound of wax, which if they spend 2 years without attending or paying will be excluded from the brotherhood in one of its meetings .

Once,  make a list and before the mass of the party begins, it will be seen by the mayordomos if any brother is missing, and whoever arrives after the count will present himself to the mayordomo so that he will have you present.

Twelve , being an ancient custom that the brothers pay one real annually for the expenses of the brotherhood because they do not have other assets, follow the same custom, being subject to this under the penalty of being excluded from the brotherhood, if in 3 years they do not pay, to Unless, having always paid well, there are poor people who cannot pay.

Thirteen , those who do not successively want to become brotherhood for the first time will pay five reais for the brotherhood's funds and from then on they will continue to pay like the other brotherhood.

 Fourteen , the new brothers, what the previous article in its entry talks about, will express if they want to be of only the tunic, of tunic and cross, or of light: the first and second on Good Friday will attend with their insignia, also giving the first 16 maravedís and the second 24, according to ancient custom and the third will attend with a light that they will take at their expense.

Sixteen , it being also customary for mayordomos at their expense to put four candles on the days of mass obligation, and on all other days the lamp of Jesus is lit as soon as mass lasts, follow such praiseworthy custom.

 Seventeen , the agreements made at the meetings must be observed until something else is determined, but points against the rule will not be dealt with, unless they are all gathered, serving in the other determinations that they meet 18, and that the Most of these agree on one thing.

In this way approved and agreeing on it all the brothers who attended. It was proposed by some of them that it seemed regular that in all brotherhoods some suffrage be made for the souls of the deceased brotherhoods, and for this it could be done by putting a fixed number of axes that the brotherhood had for when there is a burial, and so that shine on the day of the function, against the old custom of using in wax everything that is removed from the neckline without remembering purgatory. Whose well-examined proposal, finding opposition among the brothers themselves, was passed to the vote, and by the plurality it was agreed that the number of axes be fixed at 12, the mayordomos being careful, with the intervention of the parish priest, that they be renewed when are spent, and the funds that remain are applied in masses for the deceased brothers, and in whatever is necessary so that the effigy of Jesus is decent. They also agreed that the number of tunics is 44 for now. In summary:

Already by then the brotherhood was called the Sweet Name of Jesus.

It was directed by two annual mayordomos, who governed the procession on Good Friday, and at their expense, performed the function of the brotherhood in November, and gave on Good Friday the parva consisting of a piece of bread and a half-quart cup of wine to the cofrades and the poor.

The brothers paid 5 reals for entry and 1 real annually, there were three of them who were obliged to attend the procession on Good Friday, which they could do with a tunic alone, with a tunic and cross or with a light; to confess and take communion at Christmas, to attend the two annual meetings, and to the funerals of the brothers, 12 of whom are elected annually.

They agree to buy 12 torches for the burials and the function, 44 tunics that do not refer to the color, so they would continue to be black, and the remainder is applied in masses for the deceased.

In 1849 the image deteriorated and its hands were repaired and two fingers were restored, at the cost of a donation from Don Marcelino Trabadillo Fernández “El Relator”.

1851 had 307 cofrades.

In 1859 they agree to celebrate the festival on the second Sunday after Three Kings and make a new litter for the passage, each brother paying one real at the neckline.

1865 had 261 cofrades.

In 1882, the parish priest of San Martín, Don Pedro de León, proposed creating a new commission to reform the rule, and Juan Montero Vicente, Emilio Ruiz Pérez, Pablo Rodríguez Ramos and Tomás Miranda Vicente were elected.

“First rule.

Quarter

The parish priest of San Martín, where this brotherhood is founded, will be the president of all the meetings, both ordinary and extraordinary, that are held during the year, and as such president will carry out the intervention of the funds of the brotherhood, noting the entries and outflows of flows in this same book, as other effects belonging to it, and with an Abbot who will be appointed as president, who at the same time will be the depository of the funds of the brotherhood, for which he will also have his book of intervention and they will take the accounts to the mayordomos, and after their examination and approval of the same, which will take place within 8 days after the function, in the first general meeting of the brothers they will present, both the parish priest and the abbot respectively ,his book so that the brothers find out and see the state of funds as well as their expenses and income during the year.

The main festivity will be celebrated with all solemnity on the day of the second Sunday after the Epiphany, with mass and a sermon on the eve, with the assistance of the other parish priests, whose acts will not fail to be attended by any brother of the brotherhood, except those who are serving outside the town, and in the afternoon of the day of the function there will be a procession whenever the weather allows it and through the place that is most convenient.

It will be the account of the butlers to satisfy the expenses at their expense, mass attendance and sermon, as well as the lighting of the lamp, and the four candles on holidays that are to be lit before the image and next to Jesus.

Seventh

For the best order in the annual appointment of the Abbot and mayordomos, a list will be formed from among the brothers who, due to their position, can comfortably and decently afford the expenses indicated in the previous rule, whose appointment will be made at a meeting of the brothers who attend the convocation that is ordered for the case, taking into account the age from oldest to youngest, and those who, due to their position, cannot do the aforementioned, will be forced to take the corpses to the cemetery of those brothers whose families left them or want to wear them as servants or friends.

Eighth

Mr. Abad, like the mayordomos, will be obeyed and respected by all the brothers of the brotherhood in how many religious acts are practiced, for which and better distinctive, the said Abad will wear a larger medal with a succinct violet and the butlers medal in the middle of that of the abbot and the other cofrades, the lazo being the color of a lily flower; and that of the other brothers abode. During the course of the processions, the abbot will march behind the effigy and the mayordomos to the right and left on the side of the effigy, and the four and assistants that they name from among the brothers will direct the race for better order and composure, for which they will have in mind and take good care that the younger ones go before the older ones.

Thirteenth

The collection of all amounts destined for the brotherhood will be in charge of the mayordomos and they will have the obligation to deliver them to the depositary, prior notice to the parish priest, for his intervention. The depositary will also be responsible for the obligation to have in his possession the shirts, wax and other effects belonging to the brotherhood, for their better conservation.

Fourteenth

The wax will not be given to anyone who is not a member of the brotherhood and the tunics without prior payment, nor will the brothers be charged 15 reales and those who are not 20 reales.

fifteenth

The parish priest or vicar may sue, or a person on his behalf, for the collection of amounts or fulfillment of obligations of the brotherhood, for which before proceeding with the demand he must inform the mayordomo and abbot, cuatros and caller to see if the case requires it. These attributions shall apply to the abbot and mayordomos in solidum.

sixteenth

The position of caller will be for life and will be subordinate, obedient and humble to the mandates of the abbot and mayordomos, from whom, with the parish priest, he will receive the orders for the acts that are done and practiced by the Brotherhood, in compliance with what is established in these Rules. He will also have the obligation to ring the bell of the brotherhood, for which the brotherhood fund is remunerated appropriately, announcing the religious acts that the Brotherhood celebrates, and more especially when a brother of the same dies to attend the funeral and lighting of axes . If due to his advanced age or due to his physical impossibility he could not carry out the position of caller, justifying these extremes, he is considered a brother free of charge until his death. If he fails to fulfill his duties, he will lack the obedience of the abbot, parish priest, butlers and other brothers, will be warned and rebuked; and if he reoffends he will be fired, and for his greatest work he will be freed from pay.

In order to avoid discord when carrying the images, crosses, trumpets and banner of the brotherhood, when they go out in procession during the year, they will be auctioned in public bidding on the afternoon of Palm Sunday as usual, and the amounts in which they are auctioned They will be income from the common fund of the brotherhood.

The axes of the brotherhood will burn during the funeral and offices of all the deceased brother, and the brothers will carry them lit from the church to the cemetery at burials.

nineteenth

The number of shirts can be half the number of the brothers, and the number of axes a little more than a quarter of them, who are the ones who can attend the funeral of each parish.

Twentieth

A four will be appointed in each church to take note and make a list of those who are absent from the processions that prescribe these rules, for which as soon as a brother dies, it will be announced by means of the bell.

twenty-first

Any brother of the brotherhood over 60 years of age who has been a member of the brotherhood for 10 years paying the neckline, and whose advanced age and financial status do not allow him to continue paying said neckline, will be considered a brother in fact and right, for which the confraternity in meeting and once these extremes are justified, they will be consigned in this book so that it is recorded until the death of the winner.

Each one of the brothers will be paid by way of neckline to get funds to the deposit of this brotherhood to better meet the needs of the same, for each year four reais which must be delivered to the mayordomos or person on their behalf, for at least 8 days before the function.

The insignias are fixed, being that of the largest abbot with a violet ribbon, that of the intermediate mayordomos with a lily flower-colored ribbon, and those of the smaller brotherhoods with a purple ribbon, from which I deduce that the color of the brotherhood and its tunic was already purple.

In 1896 the church of San Martín is suppressed as a parish and is annexed to Santa María el Moral of the brotherhood to depend on.

In 1904, when Don José Mayo was the only parish priest of the entire town, on the death of Don Pedro de León, the belongings of the brotherhood were recorded:

In 1911 an incident took place caused by the rumor that the parish priest wanted to sell the image of Jesus. In the Plaza de San Martín a crowd of people gathered in protest that forced the civil guard to intervene until the spirits calmed down. It is one of the memories of my childhood transmitted by my grandmother Cirila, confirmed by this news item in the press at the time.

I don't know if the rumor was founded, but Don José Mayo's fame of selling a large part of the heritage from the disappeared parishes of San Pedro and San Salvador in order to reform that of Santa María, had transcended, and leaves it on record. don Manuel Gómez Moreno in his book Monumental Catalog of Spain. Province of Zamora, which Villafáfila visits in 1903:

“ I experienced another feeling there, and a painful one,  because the scenes of  devastating vandalism that made certain revolutions execrable, to the great detriment of culture,  were now taking place under the direction of a parish priest  who, with foresight worthy of a better cause, remedied the effects of the abandonment to which  the suppressed parish churches would have come, throwing them to the ground and selling their spoils of all kinds , and even the value of the only preserved church, with an attempt, it seems, to enlarge the latter. And, to be said in honor of the town itself: his neighborhood protested in the meantime, with more healthy logic, than what had been done .”

In the 1950s, the brotherhood ceased to function as such.

1953 the church of San Martín disappears, the images are transferred to Santa María del Moral, from which they still exist today.
