Since ancient times our ancestors sang songs, such as when they went to agricultural tasks, such as the grape harvest, etc., coplas were written on very diverse themes, they gave proverbs such as San Antón day, and as not bullfighting, they were always vindictive directed to the consistory that in that moment composed it, they sounded louder if they observed that there could not be a bullfighting celebration, a form of struggle also against the ruling class. The peak day occurred on the day of Santiago when the bulls were requested by the population, we do not know when this custom came from, perhaps it started when the festivities had already become August 16 in San Roque in the 17th century, previously They were celebrated on the day of Saint John the Baptist, June 24, and already in the middle of the 16th century we have references to bullfighting festivities and, as reflected in the year 1873, the constancy of the disorders that occurred when bulls were not hired.
That surely as in the fifth centuries that the Villa has been celebrating bullfights, in the most troubled times, the couplets and songs were more spicy or stronger. To reflect this in 1900, the events that occurred and the couplets that were published in multiple headers of all the provinces. Both the Heraldo de Zamora and the Ancora report the same news on different days. Herald of Zamora August 20, 1900 [1] “The mayor of Villafafila communicates that, as a consequence of having buried the cattle that had to be dealt with on the day of San Roque the day before, a disturbance of public order was promoted. The rioters, with pikes and grating. Manuel Alonso Martín , the councilor mentioned in the information, was 36 years old, he was the father of Cónsola, and grandfather of Manolo de la Granja Alonso “Bomba” . REQUEST FOR BULLS ON THE DAY OF SANTIAGO APOSTO JULY 25 One of the traditions linked to bulls was the custom of: "Ask for the bulls on the day of Santiago Apóstol July 25" . We do not know when this custom comes from, perhaps it started when the festivities had already become August 16 in San Roque, in the 17th century, as we saw previously they were the day of Saint John the Baptist, June 24, and as reflected in the year 1873 the record of the disorders that occurred when the bulls were not hired. Of the popular songs about the request of the bulls, we see one already between the 1873-90 section, but this fact of songs and couplets would very surely be a fact produced at the beginning when the bulls were celebrated back in the 15th century. Then the night before Santiago, the craftsmen and servants who were in the middle of the gathering task would come to sleep at the house and who stayed at night to sleep in the threshing floors. On the 25th, people went out into the streets with cowbells to ask for the bulls through the streets, at the door of the mayor or the town hall, singing songs and songs composed for that purpose, with the rhythm of the jota, some of whose lyrics are preserved. This denotes the great fondness that the Villa has for bullfighting and its festivities, they were vehemently requested, when the City Council did not give them, it used to be the beginning of riots and demonstrations mixing other kinds, these exaltations were a way of channeling the confrontation social : "... Bulls are talked about from the day of Santiago in the afternoon until the day of San Roque, San or Roquito, which is the day after, or San Roquín, which is the 18th, and if they don't run in Villafáfila the bulls are run the first day, and the second day they run the third, even if it is half dead…” [4] . This tradition is lost in Villafáfila in the last years of the 50s, where a decade and a half until 1971 when the bullfights resumed, the request for bullfights has not been made again until today. Perhaps it would be one of the traditions to recover in this very bullfighting Villa. COPLAS AND SONGS OF REQUEST OF THE BULLS Today the lyrics may seem rude or wild to us, but you have to put them in the context of the village 70, 100 years ago or more. Most of the population was made up of day laborers, artisans, shepherds, small farmers, the poor and widows, with very harsh living, working and housing conditions. The festivals and the bullfights were one of the few means of escape. As we have been able to read in the humorous article written in the Heraldo de Zamora on August 13, 1908, titled "TOROS EN VILLAFÁFILA [5] " leaves us with relevance and testimony that the people of this Villa have about the great fans they have for each other. , then they jumped with songs on the day of Santiago, either in taverns or on the street, until the festival of San Roque with songs alluding to the bulls, which many were demanding that they be given, in them alluding to the municipal corporation, where Due to its great transmission, I will reproduce it completely, to later be dissected in its content to the reference to songs. It even refers to Manzanilla de Villafáfila, already giving it a famous status at that time, which would come from much earlier. 1908 this humorous article that does not transport us to the prefestive atmosphere of the beginning of the century and leaves us testimony of some characters and nicknames that have remained in the collective memory. Heraldo de Zamora on August 13, 1908 [6] “ BULLS IN VILLAFÁFILA PLATES —Today I bring you tasty news! —Is it that good? how much do you excite me? -Almost nothing! the story of something the sea of good. —Some nut from the town you come from, or some reaper tale. —If none of that, I went to Villafáfila to bring me the best manzanilla [7] in Spain, well, the one you spend; it's bad I stopped at Cachín's house (former Mateote inn and tavern) and since it was Sunday, there was a lot of excitement. We can more or less classify the following couplet in time since it refers to "Don Sabas" as the name refers to D. Sabas Calzada Suena [11] (Villafáfila 1845 - 1916 Villafáfila) who participated in municipal politics, was a councilor in 1879 and 1887, mayor in 1888-90, in the ranks of the conservative party.
